  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: Analyse the trends of the AIDS epidemic among women in the
  10.        State of Sao Paulo from 1983 to 1993. METHODS: Evaluation of all
  11.        reported AIDS cases in the State until 11/93. RESULTS: 28174 cases were
  12.        reported (M = 23657, F = 4517). Since 1987 the absolute annual increase
  13.        among women is of 50% while among men from 1991 to 1992 it was of 17%.
  14.        The M/F ratio fell from 9/1 to 4/1 from 1987 to 1992. Among males in
  15.        1987, 15.2% were IVDU, 36% bisexual and 5.4% heterosexual. In 1992 this
  16.        figures were 36%, 12% and 12% respectively. Among women until 1986 only
  17.        23 cases were reported. From 1987 to 1990, 49.6% of the cases were in
  18.        IVDU, 36% in heterosexuals and 7.8% in blood receptors. In the time
  19.        period of 1990 to 1992 these figures were 36.2%, 46% and 4%
  20.        respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The epidemic is growing faster among women
  21.        then among men. Initially IVDU was the main risk situation but, in the
  22.        90s heterosexual practice, probably linked more with sexual partnership
  23.        with a male IVDU, appears as the main cause of HIV infection among
  24.        women.
